History
Mahant Bachittar Singh College of Engineering & Technology has been established by Sant Manjit Singh Trust registered under the aegis of Dera Sant Pura Nangali Sahib Poonch, J&K (UT), India. The Dera traces its roots back to three disciples of the 10th Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh Ji, who were sent to the hilly state of Jammu & Kashmir to preach the message of love, universal brotherhood, oneness of God, and service to humanity.
The fourth successor, Sant Bhai Mela Singh Ji, established a permanent center called a Dera at village Nangali on the Drungly stream (5 km off Poonch Town) in 1803 AD, known as Shiromani Sant Pura Dera Nangali Sahib. The Dera has historically been visited by Maharaja Ranjit Singh (in 1814), Maharaja Gulab Singh, and numerous other dignitaries and devotees. In 1947, Mahant Bachittar Singh Ji foresaw the uprooting of over 90% of the Hindu-Sikh population from Poonch, Muzaffarabad, and Kashmir, leading to their resettlement in Jammu. He purchased land at Digiana (Jammu) and established the Sant Mela Singh Technical Ashram, which became a socio-religious-economic-educational hub for the Sikh minority in J&K. Recognizing that technical education was essential for the future and noting that deserving minority students secured very few seats in government institutions, Late Mahant Bachittar Singh Ji initiated the establishment of an engineering college as a minority institution prior to his passing in November 1991. The mission was carried forward by his successor, Sant Manjit Singh. The project was initiated in 1993, received final approval from the J&K Government in 1998 and AICTE in 1999, and obtained affiliation with the University of Jammu in July 1999 (with the first batch starting in October 1999-2000).
